This two-part workshop is designed to help WashU graduate students familiarize themselves with writing for public venues.

We will ask why the work of writing across multiple disciplines and audiences is important and how to pitch to various outlets. Public scholarship allows us to share our academic work with larger communities, forging conversations beyond the university.

The first hour of the workshop (3-4pm) will cover:

  • Opportunities for public writing through the Office of Public Scholarship and various departments
  • Understanding what public writing is and its value for scholars and communities
  • The process of pitching to an array of venues such as The Common Reader, The Conversation, and others

The second hour of the workshop (4-5pm) will include:

  • A workshop on pitch writing and framing
  • A deep dive into The Common Reader, an international online monthly of essays, cultural analysis, reviews, and creative non-fiction

Refreshments will be provided. Registration for both segments of the workshop is required.

This workshop is cosponsored by the Office of Public Scholarship, the Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Graduate Program, and the Graduate Certificate in Global Black Studies in the African and African American Studies department.
